Recyclable and recyclable packaging claims on UK landing pages — CAP literacy

Packaging callouts — “fully recyclable box”, “widely recycled”, “plastic-free mailer” — sit beside product heroes and checkout trust strips. Shoppers often treat them as factual statements about what happens after delivery, not marketing shorthand. This guide helps UK marketers inventory recyclable packaging claims against published CAP/ASA environmental advertising literacy. Not ASA clearance and not waste-regulation advice.

Not ASA clearance. Not legal advice. CiteBefore inventories advertising claims and evidence columns. The ASA decides complaints. See green claims checklist.

Packaging claims vs product claims

A recyclable pack line does not substantiate a recyclable product or a net-zero brand headline — net zero headline claims, eco certification badges. Register each module separately on the same URL.

Material information on the landing page

CAP rules expect material limitations to be clear where the claim is seen. If recyclability depends on removing a pump or taking film to a store drop-off, burying that only in a PDF may fail the “held in the ad” test for shoppers who never open it.

Icons, badges and trust strips

Third-party marks may carry their own use rules — trust badge claims. A generic green leaf icon without qualifying copy can still read as a recyclability promise; inventory the visual plus adjacent words.

Bundles and free gifts

Promotional inserts and outer shipping cartons may differ from primary retail packaging — free gift with purchase claims, bundle pricing claims. State which SKU each packaging line describes.

Pre-publish register habit

  1. Quote each packaging line at mobile and desktop.
  2. Map components — primary, secondary, tertiary pack.
  3. Hold substantiation dated before go-live in the evidence column.
  4. Run free scan on staging URL.

What this guide is not

  • Not packaging compliance consulting — EPR and labelling law sit with specialists.
  • Not ASA Copy Advice — pre-clearance is a separate ASA service.
  • Not legal advice on green claims beyond CAP literacy.

Questions

Is 100% recyclable always an absolute claim?

Shoppers often read it as the whole pack is recyclable in typical UK kerbside systems. Inventory component parts, films, pumps and local collection reality — CAP 3.7 literacy only.

Do icons count as claims?

Mobius loops and green ticks beside copy are part of the ad. Log icon plus adjacent text as one or linked rows in your register.

Does CiteBefore test recycling infrastructure?

No. CiteBefore inventories visible claim text and evidence columns. It does not audit council collection schemes.
