Award-winning claims on UK landing pages — logging CAP Rule 3.7 risk
“Award-winning”, trophy badges, and “winner 2025” ribbons convert trust. They also concentrate CAP Code rule 3.7 risk when consumers read them as objective proof of superiority — not decorative flair. This guide is a practical inventory habit for logging award lines on one live URL. Not ASA clearance.
When an award claim is objective under CAP
Rule 3.7 of the CAP Code requires documentary evidence before publication for claims consumers are likely to regard as objective. CAP’s substantiation AdviceOnline and awards AdviceOnline note that:
- Named awards (“Winner — XYZ Awards 2025”) need evidence the award was genuinely won, in the category and year stated.
- Generic “award-winning” without naming the award is often read as a superiority claim — hold evidence or qualify precisely.
- Out-of-date badges — displaying a past year’s trophy as if current can mislead if consumers assume recent recognition.
- Paid or vanity awards — if the award required payment for entry or guaranteed recognition, the likely consumer takeaway may differ from a merit-based industry prize. Inventory the claim and hold the award terms.
Where award claims hide on a live URL
- Hero trust strips and logo carousels below the fold.
- Product detail pages that reuse homepage badge SVGs.
- Email capture modules and checkout sidebars.
- Footer “as seen in / award-winning since…” lines.
- Review widgets that mix star ratings with trophy icons.
Log each distinct award line — not just the hero. If the same badge appears three times, note all locations in one register row.
Inventory checklist — four columns
-
Claim text — quote exactly as rendered (“Award-winning service”, “Best SaaS 2024 — Tech Awards”).
-
Likely consumer takeaway — independent industry recognition? Customer-voted? Paid directory listing?
-
Evidence on file — certificate, press release, award body confirmation, category and year.
-
Gap / action — qualify the year, name the award, remove stale badge, or escalate to Copy Advice.
For the wider register layout, see claim register agency template. For “best” and “No.1” lines without awards, see superlatives and best claims.
Award claims vs testimonials
A trophy badge is not substantiated by a customer quote underneath it. CAP treats objective award claims separately from testimonial rules (3.48–3.49). See testimonials are not substantiation for the register habit on review widgets.

FAQ
Do award-winning claims need substantiation under CAP?
Often yes when consumers are likely to treat them as objective proof of recognition or superiority. CAP AdviceOnline on awards and substantiation expects marketers to hold evidence the award was genuinely won, in the category and period stated, before the claim goes live.
Can I show an old trophy badge on my landing page?
Only if the on-page wording makes the year and category clear and the likely consumer takeaway is not misleading. A 2022 badge presented without a date may be read as current recognition — inventory and qualify or remove.
Does CiteBefore verify awards with the ASA?
No. CiteBefore inventories claims on a live URL. Verification and clearance stay with you, Copy Advice, or your advisers.
