Biodegradable and compostable plastic claims on UK landing pages — CAP literacy

“Biodegradable packaging”, “compostable mailer”, and “plastic-free bottle” sit in hero modules, PDP bullets and footer sustainability rows. Shoppers often read those lines as factual statements about how the pack behaves in UK bins and waterways — not as design aspirations. This guide helps UK marketers inventory biodegradable and compostable plastic claims against published CAP/ASA green-claim literacy. Not ASA clearance and not legal advice.

Not ASA clearance. Not legal advice. CiteBefore inventories advertising claims and evidence columns. The ASA decides complaints.

Why these claims need a separate register row

Biodegradable plastic is not the same claim as recyclable packaging, plant-based composition, or net zero headlines. A bottle can be “plant-based” yet not compostable in home bins. Inventory the exact string on each URL variant before publish.

CAP 3.7 literacy — objective vs puff

Published CAP materials treat many environmental claims as objective unless clearly identified as aspiration with scope explained. “Eco-friendly packaging” without qualification is harder to defend than “certified compostable to EN 13432 in industrial composting facilities only”. See clinically proven and green claims checklist and advertising claim substantiation.

Material information (Rule 3.9 habit)

If the hero says “compostable” but the FAQ says “not suitable for home composting”, the shopper may be misled about the primary disposal route. Inventory hero, accordion, and schema text together — claim register template.

Collections, bundles and PDP variants

Shopify-style “Sustainable” collection filters imply every SKU meets the same standard. One non-compostable variant breaks the collection promise — same discipline as limited stock counters and bundle pricing claims.

Badges and icons

Leaf icons and “compostable” strips beside product tiles are part of the ad — log with adjacent copy. See eco certification badge claims.

What CiteBefore does not do

We do not certify composting infrastructure, audit council collection schemes, or replace ASA Copy Advice. We inventory visible strings and flag evidence gaps on a live URL.

Questions

Is biodegradable always an absolute environmental claim?

Shoppers often read biodegradable as the product breaks down harmlessly in typical UK disposal routes. Under CAP 3.7 literacy, treat biodegradability claims as objective unless clearly qualified by environment, timeframe and disposal method.

Are compostable and biodegradable interchangeable on a page?

No. Compostable usually implies industrial or home composting standards. Log each string separately in your claim register — do not merge hero copy.

Does CiteBefore test landfill breakdown?

No. CiteBefore inventories visible claim text and evidence columns. It does not run lab tests or audit waste infrastructure.
